Conclusions

  • The experiment at the vineyard of Omala answered the question which combinations of rootstock and scion yield most grapes under local conditions in the Robola viticultural zone. This result will help winegrowers to make informed decisions when replanting existing vineyards or establishing new plantations. Given that the productive lifespan of a grafted vineyard reaches several decades, decisions taken today will have a lasting impact for the next generation of vine growers as well.

  • The experiment at the vineyard of the Ionian University in Argostoli showed that, on the basis of marginal gains in organic matter and nutrients alone, there is insufficient evidence to recommend abandoning tillage altogether and adopting No till. Still, in defence of No till, we must consider advantages such as the possible savings in labor and energy, prevention of soil erosion, and promotion of biodiversity above and below ground.
